A batch-distilled American gin draws inspiration from the robust Dutch style and is endorsed by Ryan Reynolds, whose physical attributes we cannot discuss due to legal constraints.

Crafted by distillers Lee Medoff and Christian Krogstad in collaboration with Seattle mixologist Ryan Magarian, this gin boasts a spicy and floral profile. It’s meticulously made using a neutral grain spirit derived from rye and a harmonious blend of botanicals, including juniper, cardamom, coriander, lavender, anise, sarsaparilla, and orange peel.

Not surprisingly, this gin shines in an Aviation cocktail but also proves its worth in a Martini and a classic G&T.

Tasting Notes by Spirits Review (Chris Carlsson)

Observations:

Hailing from a realm known for its culinary enthusiasts, this small-scale distillery offers a Gin that takes a wholly unique approach. Produced in a small pot still with an emphasis on artisanal craftsmanship, it showcases what’s achievable when skill and dedication converge. Employing a traditional Dutch or early American Rye grain base (which imparts its distinct zest, spiciness, and weight in contrast to corn or wheat-based spirits), and adopting a more balanced blending method (meaning less juniper compared to a typical London Dry Gin).

Initial Impressions:

This isn’t your typical gin experience. Juniper doesn’t take the forefront here. Instead, you’ll discover sarsaparilla, lavender, and hints of anise enveloping cardamom and orange peel, with coriander subtly present in the background. All of this is accompanied by an unmistakable spiciness and earthiness contributed by the rye base.

Flavor Profile:

A medium to heavy body is skillfully balanced by the interplay of floral and spicy elements. The palate is greeted by a pleasantly weighty entry of rye and spice, while floral notes of lavender and anise grace the top. A mild tingling sensation on the lips and tongue leads to a lingering finish characterized by floral and spicy nuances, all underpinned by the grain’s presence. The distillation process is impeccably clean.

Ideal Serves:

This gin shines in several cocktail options. It crafts an exceptional and unique martini, especially for those who aren’t fans of juniper’s dominance. Its excellence in a gin and tonic is noteworthy, where the lavender and effervescence create an unexpected and delightful surprise. The Aviation cocktail truly stands out: a combination of 4 parts gin, 1 part fresh lemon juice, and 1 part dry maraschino liqueur. It even adds an intriguing twist to a Lassi, albeit with a hint of irreverence.

Closing Remarks:

This gin makes a commendable attempt at being something entirely different. By taking an old-style genever or American-style base and applying deft blending, maceration, and distillation techniques, it succeeds in creating a genuinely exceptional gin. This is the gin to resurrect those classic pre-Prohibition American cocktail recipes, such as the Alamagoozlum and a myriad of others, which simply can’t be replicated with a traditional London Dry Gin. Remarkably affordable compared to its competitors, it’s a must-have for discerning gin enthusiasts.
