The Botanist Islay Dry Gin embodies delicacy, balance, and intricacy. Crafted using 22 locally hand-harvested botanicals sourced from the Isle of Islay.
A truly captivating and distinct gin hails from the Bruichladdich Islay whisky distillery, bearing the name The Botanist. It undergoes its transformation within a Lomond still affectionately known as ‘Ugly Betty,’ boasting an impressive array of 31 botanical ingredients, among which 22 originate right from the Southern Hebridean isle itself.
These indigenous botanicals, including the intriguing mugwort, meadowsweet, and the mysterious Lady’s Bedstraw flowers, contribute to the creation of this dry gin, which is aptly characterized as ‘floral,’ evoking the essence of its unique origins.
Tasting Notes by Seb:
Aroma A complex and distinctly floral bouquet greets the senses, with elderflower and mint emerging as the standout botanicals after a few minutes.
Taste A gin that’s both rich and exceptionally smooth, a rarity in its ability to be enjoyed neat. The lemon balm imparts a prominent citrus note, beautifully balanced by an array of floral flavors from the various botanicals employed. While sometimes too many ingredients can overwhelm, in this case, the whole is undeniably greater than the sum of its parts.
Finish The finish is enduring and intricate, with the botanicals gradually fading away one by one, leaving behind a delightful minty freshness at the very end.
Comment I can count the number of gins I’ve savored neat on one hand, and this one makes the cut. However, it’s also incredibly versatile, holding its own with Fentiman’s tonic and crafting a wonderfully floral martini. Betty, the old girl, has truly excelled!
Producer’s Note:
Appearance Quicksilver.
Texture The spirit flows over the palate with a satin-smooth quality, unlike any gin you’ve encountered before—an entirely seductive experience.
Aroma The aromas burst forth like a dazzling aurora borealis for the nose, enveloping the senses with meteorites of scents that explode from the glass. Sweet and delicate menthol, apple mint, the essence of spring woodlands, juniper, coriander with hints of aniseed, lemon and orange zest, a bouquet of summer flowers from Machir, thistle honey, gorse-sourced coconut, wild mint, and the meadows of summer—all harmonize in a magical symphony, celebrating Islay’s natural riches, from the Atlantic-kissed beaches to heather-clad hilltops. Inhale, and you’re transported to the Queen of the Hebrides!
Taste The flavor is opulent and smooth, with a coolness on entry that transitions into a warm and exquisitely pure sensation as it caresses the back palate. This gin is enchanting, delectable, and luxurious; its citrus vibrancy tantalizes and invigorates the taste buds, unleashing a burst of flavors that dance across the palate.
Finish All of this magic is conjured from a weathered old pot still, operated by seasoned distillers on the heavenly coastal shores.
